Weekly retro: Never underestimate the power of a good relationship.
I had the pleasure of working with a new client who just so happened to be an old colleague. It’s a funny thing working with someone from your past, you preserve a memory of the place, the people, the time even the smell. When you’re faced with someone away from that context, it feels a little strange. Seeing my old friend was in no way strange in fact quite the opposite, it was very uplifting, but it is the change in environment and context which was odd.
Our relationship in my old company was very collaborative, we worked on many projects and I’d like to think worked pretty well together. Although I haven’t seen him in over 3 years and meeting in a professional context it was great to see such trust almost immediately in the work ahead. There is no proving yourself to the client or questioning “what type of client they will be” – It was just easy. Creating good professional relationships is such an important part of your career as you never know who you’ll have the pleasure of working with again.
