Designing and Developing the Brand and Website for KUGO – A Flick-Based Dexterity Game

STATUS: Live – go to www.kugo.games

KUGO is an innovative start-up that has developed an engaging flick-based dexterity game. The game combines skill, strategy, and precision, requiring players to flick a wooden puck to achieve a myriad of specific goals. I had to develop both the brand brand identity and a website that showcases the game’s unique features, prior to the upcoming Kickstarter.

Objective

The primary goal was to establish a strong brand presence for KUGO and create an intuitive website that effectively communicates the game’s concept and features. The brand identity needed to resonate with the target audience – gamers who enjoy skill-based challenges as well as casual family and party gamers.

Design Process:

Research and Discovery:

  • Conducted a thorough market analysis to understand the gaming industry and identify key competitors.
  • Explored the target audience’s preferences and gaming habits through surveys and interviews.

Brand Identity:

  • The game is made solid from solid wood and uses no plastic components. It is an important identity for the brand. The logo juxtaposes the earthy nature of the game and instead reflects the dynamic and fast-paced nature of the game. The logo features a stylised flick motion with vibrant secondary colours to convey energy and excitement.
  • The bold colour palette, including a combination of electric blue and neon pink, evokes a sense of playfulness and innovation, designed to grab attention and reflect the “fun” nature of the game.
  • The components in every KUGO box are made from rudimentary and geometric shapes. I wanted to use a font with a strong sense of geometry as well as being heavy enough to reflect the block-like components found in the box. I picked Fat Frank as it met this criteria but also has a playful nature that fonts like Brandon Grotesque don’t. I pair this display font with “Inter” for its legibility. The tall x height makes it easy to read and it’s still very clean and crisp which marries up with the brand.

Website Design:

  • Created a clean and responsive website design to ensure a seamless user experience across various devices.
  • Incorporated high-quality visuals, including screenshots and gameplay images and videos, to showcase the graphics and gameplay of KUGO.
  • This site is firmly in the “Marketing” phase, focused on communicating what the game is, how to play it ad more importantly how to buy one! The site will allow users to submit their own games to the KUGO team and get their games showcased on the website.

Interactive Features:

  • Integrated interactive elements on the website, such as a demo version of the game that visitors can play directly in their browsers.
  • Included a blog section to regularly update users on game developments, tips, and community events.

Social Media Integration:

  • Developed social media profiles for KUGO on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook popular among gamers.
  • Integrated social media feeds into the website to encourage community engagement.

Outcome

The collaborative efforts resulted in a vibrant brand identity and a user-centric website for KUGO. The dynamic logo and visually appealing website effectively captured the essence of the flick-based dexterity game, attracting the target audience and generating buzz within the gaming community.

Next Steps

Continued to work on KUGO for ongoing website maintenance, social media management, and potential expansion of the brand into merchandise or additional gaming platforms.
